I'm happy

"Gorgeous" is the right word for the display. No dead pixels, beautiful widescreen and an unobtrusive black frame and stand.

It's basic; no USB ports or other bells and whistles, and the speakers are not any better than your ordinary laptop speakers.

There are some little annoyances, beginning with Amazon's goofy tech details list for this item and continuing on to ViewSonic's poor documentation. I haven't had any problems with the on-screen display or blackouts, but the procedure to change the volume on the monitor speakers is not intuitive at all and is not documented correctly in the user manual file.

But the beast looks very good on the desk, and has a lot of real estate for multiple windows or for watching a widescreen DVD.

I certainly wouldn't pay more for an HDMI port, because the speakers are not what you would use if you often watch DVDs on your computer.
Great 1080p monitor for a low price!

I ordered this monitor with the intention of gaming and watching movies. First of, there is no hdmi with that said that didn't stop me from buying this since i can easily slap an adapter to the dvi port. When first opened, it is easily put together by a simple slide in and done now ready to turn on it has an annoying auto image adjust that stays there ever time you change resolution but don't worry you can take it off. It shows rather nicely the speakers are not that impressive but its not like they were going to be. It definitely keeps up when playing games like left4dead and gta IV. Watching movies on this monitor in 1080p is nice colors vivid and deep blacks..

There are only small itches that needed to be scratched, first off when you turn off auto image adjust when using it on the ps3 it tends to go black and you have to turn off the monitor and on so it can show again not sure how to fix it or if it can be fixed its more of a nuisance then a problem to me (tip, when watching blu ray on ps3 this monitor tends to show purple all around if you have your mode in cmyk or something like that and switch it to rgb). The other itch is it lacks HDMI and a some what viewing limited.

All in all this monitor is worth the money with its limited ports and small quirks would definitely recommend this monitor towards someone who is looking for one that's cheap and gets the job done.
ViewSonic VA2223wm + Cable settop box = Inexpensive HDTV

Review Date: January 17, 2010
Reviewer: Jay Riley,
Using an HDMI to DVI cable for video, and an RCA jack to stereo 1/8th inch jack for sound, this monitor plus my Time Warner HD cable box is now serving as a low cost 22" HDTV. While it would be nice to be able to change the sound volume using a remote (and I imagine I could if I ran the sound out from the set-top box through a stereo system or home theatre system), this is a perfectly acceptable solution for the competitively low price.

Kudos to Amazon for getting this to me well ahead of schedule. Everything arrived well packaged and in excellent condition.

The ViewSonic box included power cord, installation CD (for computer, not needed for my use), a VGA cable and brief instructions.
Whoohoo! Full HD!

Reviewer: oldpink, Indiana, US
Several years ago, I had moved up to an LCD monitor (LG model L1720P, 17", 4x3 aspect ratio), and I was glad that I had finally retired my tired old monstrosity of a CRT.
I really enjoyed the advantages of LCD over CRT that many who still insist on the old technology may not be aware of, those being:
1) less than 1/3 the bulk of an equivalent CRT
2) weighs about 1/8 of an equivalent CRT
3) runs far cooler
4) uses far less energy to operate
5) much faster wakeup time from sleep mode
6) should have greater longevity

It was definitely a move in the right direction, and I would never go back to CRT, but I wanted to move on up to a far larger monitor with full HD and integral speakers as a bonus to further cut back on desk space occupation and electrical outlet use.
I was really impressed when I plugged this in for the first time, and I decided to wring it out by playing the old Quake2 game all the way through to the finish.
It worked perfectly, and it sure was nice being able to move up to a size that made it much easier to see what was happening on screen.
Well, that was fun, but what I really wanted this for was to better see text from web pages and documents.
Again, I was quite impressed by the bright, dramatically wider view, with text sharp and clear, even at the full 1920x1080 resolution, that I no longer need to squint.
By contrast, my old and still quite good LG monitor sometimes forced me to squint when I set it to my preferred 1280x1024 resolution.
I was also a bit surprised by how the technology has progressed in terms of miniaturization between generations of LCD monitors, with my much smaller LG monitor weighing two pounds more than this new ViewSonic.
I was also pleased with the integral speakers, which sound really quite good, and they allow me to untether myself from my bulky Creative 5.1 sound setup.
I suppose I could still hook up the old 5.1 setup for watching movies and the like in the future, but in the meantime it is much nicer to have only a monitor, keyboard, trackball, and computer itself on the desk.
I also have tested out the Eco mode, a lower power operating mode that generally slightly dims the illumination to both save energy and to extend the life of the fluorescent illumination lamp, and I am very impressed with this.
This Eco mode offers three different settings, each designed for different levels of dimming.
In fact, I prefer setting it to the most power saving mode for the way I prefer to run my computer, which is in a very dimly lit room with my Logitech illuminated keyboard.
The controls for the monitor are self-explanatory, and the control buttons seem reasonably durable.
I also liked the stand, which feels pretty substantial and adjusts without shifting around, and it also allows instant removal for packing the monitor for moving.
I was also satisfied with the rest of the build construction of this monitor, and I will definitely recommend this to my friends and family should any of them consider a monitor upgrade.
I also should point out that this is one of the best buys out there for monitors of equivalent size and features.
One thing that you should know before you use this monitor is that it comes only with a standard VGA cable, which works fine, but it does not include a DVI cable, which you will want if you intend to maximize the image quality and performance.
This is not a big issue, since generic DVI cables are easily obtainable for not very much, including right here: Cables To Go - 26911 - 2M DVI-D M/M Dual Link Digital Video Cable (Black)
I don't think that $8.26 is too much for a decent dual link DVI cable.
You can also buy a generic (PPA brand, FWIW) dual link cable at Fry's for $10 if you don't feel like ordering one here.
Of course, if you are going to use this only with an older computer without a DVI port on its video card, don't even bother with a DVI cable, unless you either upgrade the video card to one with DVI, or buy a whole new system, which will undoubtedly have one as it comes.

Last of all, even though this is not related to the monitor itself, I was amazed by how quick Amazon was in getting this to me.
I ordered this early on a Sunday morning, when (presumably) Amazon's employees are not working, choosing the Free Super Saver Shipping, and I had it in my hands on Tuesday morning!
In fact, it was so quick in arriving that the package tracking on Amazon - at the time I write this review - still does not show that it has already been delivered, and I am writing this on Friday morning of the same week as the Monday it was delivered.
Great monitor, and Amazon's service is exemplary.
Good Value

I purchased this for my dad as a Christmas present. He couldn't really figure out how to turn it on, apparently the buttons are not clearly marked. But other than that he seems happy with the durability and the quality of the product.

P.S. the on button is the middle one. :-)

Book Description

The New York Times best-selling Freakonomics was a worldwide sensation, selling over four million copies in thirty-five languages and changing the way we look at the world. Now, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner return with SuperFreakonomics, and fans and newcomers alike will find that the freakquel is even bolder, funnier, and more surprising than the first.

Four years in the making, SuperFreakonomics asks not only the tough questions, but the unexpected ones: What's more dangerous, driving drunk or walking drunk? Why is chemotherapy prescribed so often if it's so ineffective? Can a sex change boost your salary?

SuperFreakonomics challenges the way we think all over again, exploring the hidden side of everything with such questions as:

  • How is a street prostitute like a department-store Santa?
  • Why are doctors so bad at washing their hands?
  • How much good do car seats do?
  • What's the best way to catch a terrorist?
  • Did TV cause a rise in crime?
  • What do hurricanes, heart attacks, and highway deaths have in common?
  • Are people hard-wired for altruism or selfishness?
  • Can eating kangaroo save the planet?
  • Which adds more value: a pimp or a Realtor?

Levitt and Dubner mix smart thinking and great storytelling like no one else, whether investigating a solution to global warming or explaining why the price of oral sex has fallen so drastically. By examining how people respond to incentives, they show the world for what it really is – good, bad, ugly, and, in the final analysis, super freaky.

Freakonomics has been imitated many times over – but only now, with SuperFreakonomics, has it met its match.

From Superfreakonomics: Where do you stand on the freak-o-meter?

Four years ago, you were cool. You read Freakonomics when it first came out. You impressed family and friends and dazzled dates with the insights you gleaned. Now Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner return with Superfreakonomics, a freakquel even bolder, funnier, and more surprising than the first.

Have you been keeping up? Can you call yourself a SuperFreak? Test your Superfreakonomics know-how now:

Question 1: 5 points
According to Superfreakonomics, what has been most helpful in improving the lives of women in rural India?
A. The government ban on dowries and sex-selective abortions
B. The spread of cable and satellite television
C. Projects that pay women to not abort female babies
D. Condoms made specially for the Indian market

Question 2: 3 points
Among Chicago street prostitutes, which night of the week is the most profitable?
A. Saturday
B. Monday
C. Wednesday
D. Friday

Question 3: 5 points
You land in an emergency room with a serious condition and your fate lies in the hands of the doctor you draw. Which characteristic doesn’t seem to matter in terms of doctor skill?
A. Attended a top-ranked medical school and served a residency at a prestigious hospital
B. Is female
C. Gets high ratings from peers
D. Spends more money on treatment

Question 4: 3 points
Which cancer is chemotherapy more likely to be effective for?
A. Lung cancer
B. Melanoma
C. Leukemia
D. Pancreatic cancer

Question 5: 5 points
Half of the decline in deaths from heart disease is mainly attributable to:
A. Inexpensive drugs
B. Angioplasty
C. Grafts
D. Stents

Question 6: 3 points
True or False: Child car seats do a better job of protecting children over the age of 2 from auto fatalities than regular seat belts.

Question 7: 5 points
What’s the best thing a person can do personally to cut greenhouse gas emissions?
A. Drive a hybrid car
B. Eat one less hamburger a week
C. Buy all your food from local sources

Question 8: 3 points
Which is most effective at stopping the greenhouse effect?
A. Public-awareness campaigns to discourage consumption
B. Cap-and-trade agreements on carbon emissions
C. Volcanic explosions
D. Planting lots of trees

Question 9: 5 points
In the 19th century, one of the gravest threats of childbearing was puerperal fever, which was often fatal to mother and child. Its cause was finally determined to be:
A. Tight bindings of petticoats early in the pregnancy
B. Foul air in the delivery wards
C. Doctors not taking sanitary precautions
D. The mother rising too soon in the delivery room

Question 10: 3 points
Which of the following were not aftereffects of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks on September 11, 2001:
A. The decrease in airline traffic slowed the spread of influenza.
B. Thanks to extra police in Washington, D.C., crime fell in that city.
C. The psychological effects of the attacks caused people to cut back on their consumption of alcohol, which led to a decrease in traffic accidents.
D. The increase in border security was a boon to some California farmers, who, as Mexican and Canadian imports declined, sold so much marijuana that it became one of the states most valuable crops.

Answers and Scoring
Question 1
B, Cable and satellite TV. Women with television were less willing to tolerate wife beating, less likely to admit to having a “son preference,” and more likely to exercise personal autonomy. Plus, the men were perhaps too busy watching cricket.

Question 2
A, Saturday nights are the most profitable. While Friday nights are the busiest, the single greatest determinant of a prostitute’s price is the specific trick she is hired to perform. And for whatever reason, Saturday customers purchase more expensive services.

Question 3
C, One factor that doesn’t seem to matter is whether a doctor is highly rated by his or her colleagues. Those named as best by their colleagues turned out to be no better than average at lowering death rates--although they did spend less money on treatments.

Question 4
C, Leukemia. Chemotherapy has proven effective on some cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and testicular cancer, especially if these cancers are detected early. But in most cases, chemotherapy is remarkably ineffective, often showing zero discernible effect. That said, cancer drugs make up the second-largest category of pharmaceutical sales, with chemotherapy comprising the bulk.

Question 5
A, Inexpensive drugs. Expensive medical procedures, while technologically dazzling, are responsible for a remarkably small share of the improvement in heart disease. Roughly half of the decline has come from reductions in risk factors like high cholesterol and high blood pressure, both of which are treated with relatively inexpensive drugs. And much of the remaining decline is thanks to ridiculously inexpensive treatments like aspirin, heparin, ACE inhibitors, and beta-blockers.

Question 6
False. Based on extensive data analysis as well as crash tests paid for by the authors, old-fashioned seat belts do just as well as car seats.

Question 7
B, Shifting less than one day per week’s worth of calories from red meat and dairy products to chicken, fish, eggs, or a vegetable-based diet achieves more greenhouse-gas reduction than buying all locally sourced food, according to a recent study by Christopher Weber and H. Scott Matthews, two Carnegie Mellon researchers. Every time a Prius or other hybrid owner drives to the grocery store, she may be cancelling out its emissions-reducing benefit, at least if she shops in the meat section. Emission from cows, as well as sheep and other ruminants, are 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide released by cars and humans.

Question 8
C, the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines discharged more than 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which acted like a layer of sunscreen, reducing the amount of solar radiation and cooling off the earth by an average of one degree F.

Question 9
C, doctors not taking sanitary precautions. This was the dawning age of the autopsy, and doctors did not yet know the importance of washing their hands after leaving the autopsy room and entering the delivery room.

Question 10
C, the psychological effect of the attacks caused people to increase their alcohol consumption, and traffic accidents increased as a result.

Scoring
32-40: Certified SuperFreak
25-31: Freak--surprises lay in wait for you
16-24: Wannabe freak--you’ve got some reading to do
1-15: Conventional wisdomer--you’re still thinking in old ways

With Magic Mouse, Apple has brought Multi-Touch technology to the desktop mouse, giving you a new and more intuitive way to interact with your computer. Just as with iPhone, iPod touch, and MacBook Pro, the Bluetooth Magic Mouse adds gestures and swipes to the usual clicks to bring more functionality and help you get more done with less effort.

Apple Magic Mouse
At a Glance:
  • Multi-Touch technology enables swipes and gestures.
  • Laser technology for accurate tracking on nearly any surface.
  • Bluetooth for simple setup.
  • Stunning ambidextrous design.

Software lets you set Magic Mouse to do exactly what you want. View larger.

The entire top of the mouse is a Multi-Touch surface. View larger.
Beautiful Design with Seamless Multi-Touch Surface
One look at Magic Mouse and you'll know it's something special that only Apple could dream up. With a low-profile design and seamless top shell, you'll marvel at this beautiful mouse and its smooth, buttonless appearance.

It's not all looks, though. Once you touch it, you'll appreciate how good it feels in your hand. And the magic really begins when you start using it. The Multi-Touch surface covers the entire top of the mouse, and the mouse itself is the button. Scroll in any direction with one finger, swipe through web pages and photos with two, and click and double-click anywhere. Inside Magic Mouse is a chip that tells it exactly what you want to do. Which means Magic Mouse won’t confuse a scroll with a swipe. It even knows when you’re just resting your hand on it.

Laser-Tracking Engine
Magic Mouse uses powerful laser tracking that’s far more sensitive and responsive on more surfaces than traditional optical tracking. That means it tracks with precision on nearly every surface - whether it’s a table at your favorite cafe or the desk in your home office - without the need for a mousepad.

Wireless Convenience with Easy Bluetooth Setup
Magic Mouse connects wirelessly to your Mac via Bluetooth, so there’s no wire or separate adapter to worry about. Pair Magic Mouse with your Bluetooth-enabled Mac and enjoy a reliable and secure connection up to 33 feet away. When you combine Magic Mouse with the Apple Wireless Keyboard, you create a workspace free of annoying cables.

And because Magic Mouse is wireless, it can venture beyond the confines of your desk. A quick flick of the on/off switch helps conserve battery power while Magic Mouse is tucked in your bag. Even when it’s on, Magic Mouse manages power efficiently, by detecting periods of inactivity automatically.

Make One Great Gesture After Another
Multi-Touch technology on the iPhone and iPod touch introduced a breakthrough way to interact with your content. Magic Mouse, with its Multi-Touch surface, does the same thing for your Mac. When you use gestures, it’s as if you’re touching what’s on your screen. For instance, swiping through web pages in Safari gives you the feeling of flicking through pages in a magazine. And scrolling with Magic Mouse isn’t your everyday scrolling. It supports momentum scrolling (similar to iPhone and iPod touch), where the scrolling speed is dictated by how fast or slowly you perform the gesture.

Stunning, beautiful design by Apple. View larger.
Give It Your Personal Touch
Maybe you want scrolling but don’t want swiping. Or two-button clicking instead of one. Whatever the case, Magic Mouse works the way you want it to work. All you do is go to the Magic Mouse preference pane in System Preferences to enable or disable features.

The ambidextrous design of Magic Mouse means it fits comfortably in your right hand if you’re a righty or in your left hand if you’re a lefty. And left-handers can easily swap left and right button functionality using System Preferences.

System Requirements

  • Bluetooth-enabled Mac computer
  • Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0
  • Existing keyboard and mouse for setup

Multi-Touch technology lets you use gestures and swipes directly on the mouse surface.

Product Details

  • Laser technology delivers 20 times the performance of standard optical tracking
  • Miniature sensors detect even the slightest movement
  • Top-shell design matches other Apple products
  • Bluetooth technology and Touch-sensitive technology
